5 Ways to Exercise Together as a Family
With life’s busy schedules these days how can you incorporate exercise to your families daily routine?? It is easier than you think, just have to adjust the way we view exercise. Exercise does not mean you have to go out and run laps or lift weights, exercise is all about adopting a healthy active lifestyle.
A family that plays together, stays together. By turning exercise into fun family time, not only do you get to spend great quality time together, you get to instill a healthy lifestyle for your children that they will carry throughout their lives.
Let some of these creative ideas help you turn everyday into an opportunity to stay active and fit.
1. Family Dance Party:
Crank up the music and have fun!! Push back the furniture and turn on your favorite music!! In our home we even have themed dance parties like disco night, where the cd player is filled with disco tunes and the kiddos take turns with a flashlight to be used as a strobe light. Its fun to mix things up and the kids will dance for hours!
2. Take the dog for a walk before or after dinner:
New research from North American Association on the Study of Obesity shows that dog-owners had more fun losing weight and were able to keep it off longer than non-pup-owners. Don’t have a doggy? Go look for some. Turn a walk into a game… look for a dog on the street, a cat in the window, ect. Making your daily walk a game makes it fun for the entire family!
3. Walk or Run for Charity:
Find a cause that your passionate about and there is more than likely a walk or run to support it. Take this opportunity to not only spend quality time together as a family, but make this a teachable moment by showing your child that it is important to give to others.
4. Turn TV Commercial Breaks into Exercise Breaks:
Game Time! Play Simon says during commercials, and make all the commands exercises such as push-ups, sit ups, jumping jacks, ect. In our home we have turned the exercises into silly names like princess push ups, Super Star Jumps, and super-hero sit ups. We will do each exercise that simon says until the commercial break is over.
5. Get Outside and have FUN!
Whether it is riding bikes, rollerblading, playing soccer or gardening, spending time together outdoors will ensure some healthy activity is being done. Try and pick a day of each week where together as a family you can spend at least 30 minutes outside together. Outdoor playtime builds strong, healthy families!
